About Dhaka North City Corporation
Dhaka North City Corporation administers the northern part of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Its jurisdiction encompasses 54 wards covering areas like Uttara, Mirpur, and Bimanbandar, and includes the thanas of Turag, Uttara West, and Dakshinkhan. The corporation's area was expanded in 2016 to include eight unions, resulting in a total area of 197 square kilometers.
The area was initially governed by the Dhaka City Corporation, which was dissolved in November 2011 by the Local Government (City Corporation) Amendment Bill. The creation of Dhaka North and Dhaka South City Corporations was intended to improve local governance and provide more targeted services. The first mayoral election for DNCC was held in April 2015.
The area’s geography is urban, characterized by dense populations and infrastructure. The population density within the DNCC area was 30,531 people per square kilometer in 2022.
The corporation has received recognition for its digital initiatives, including the National ICT Award in 2017. The mayoral elections are non-partisan, and the corporation is headed by a mayor who oversees a city council of 72 councillors.
