About Dhaka South City Corporation
Dhaka South City Corporation administers the southern part of Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. It was created on 29 November 2011, when the former Dhaka City Corporation was divided into two entities. The area initially covered 45 square kilometers but expanded to 109.2 square kilometers in 2017, encompassing eight unions: Shyampur, Dania, Matuail, Sarulia, Demra, Manda, Dakshingaon and Nasirabad.
The city corporation covers an area of 109.2 square kilometers and includes areas along the Buriganga River. The 2022 Census of Bangladesh recorded a population density of 39,409 people per square kilometer. The area has historically been an important port city, as evidenced by the construction of a 4-kilometer brick road from Chawkbazar to Sutrapur during the Mughal era.
The Dhaka South City Corporation consists of 75 wards and is governed by a mayor and a city council. The area played a significant role in the events leading up to the Bangladesh War of Independence. The mayor’s office administers city services, enforces laws, and oversees public property.
