About Dhanmondi
Dhanmondi Thana is located in the central part of Dhaka, within the Dhaka South City Corporation. It is bordered by Mohammadpur Thana to the north, New Market Thana to the east and south, Hazaribagh Thana to the west, and Sher-e-Bangla Nagar and Kalabagan thanas on the eastern border.
The area’s history dates back to the early 1950s when the Government of East Pakistan developed it as a planned residential area for elites. Before that, the land was used for agriculture and featured a market where rice and other grains were traded; the term 'mandi' (market) in Persian and Urdu is reflected in the area’s name. The Dhaka Improvement Trust oversaw the development of roads, infrastructure, and public amenities after 1956, initially leasing plots for 99 years.
Dhanmondi Thana covers an area of 4.34 km2. In 2022, the population of Dhanmondi Thana was recorded as 101,937, with 75,148 residents in the Dhaka North section and 26,789 in the Dhaka South section.
Originally designated for residential purposes, Dhanmondi has evolved into a mixed-use area with hospitals, malls, schools, banks, offices, and universities. Sheikh Mujibur Rahman lived at house number 32 on Road 32, and his former residence now serves as a memorial museum.
Dhanmondi offers recreational spaces like Dhanmondi Lake (Rabindra Sarobar) with a lakeside walkway and an amphitheater hosting cultural programs. Road No. 27, Sat Masjid Road, and Mirpur Road are key thoroughfares, and the area is known for its food stalls and cafes, particularly around Roads 2, 5, 8, and 32.
