About Badda
Badda Thana is located in the north-eastern part of Dhaka, within the Dhaka North City Corporation and partially encompassing areas of Tejgaon Development Circle. As of 2012, it bordered Khilkhet Thana to the north, Khilgaon Thana to the south, Rupganj Upazila to the east, and Gulshan, Cantonment, and Rampura thanas to the west. Parts of Badda are under Dhaka North City Corporation ward 21 and ward 17.
Badda’s history traces back to the early 20th century, developing gradually outside Dhaka’s municipal boundaries. The area east of Progoti Avenue emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. Badda Thana was formally established on December 9, 1998, created by separating portions of Cantonment Thana and Gulshan Thana. It initially included the mouzas of Badda, Satarkul, and Beraid, notable for their Mughal-era mosques.
Badda Thana covers an area of 16.78 square kilometers. The area includes Merul Badda, South Badda, Middle Badda, North Badda, and East Badda, as well as Shahjadpur, Satarkul, and Adarshanagar to the north, and Tekpara, Rupnagar, Sutibhola, and Sonkatra to the east. The name 'Badda' is believed to stem from the 'Bede' or 'Baida' community.
The 2022 Bangladeshi census recorded a population of 375,604 in Badda Thana, with a literacy rate of 86.41%. The area's economy is supported by its proximity to Dhaka's central areas and the presence of educational institutions. It is also home to a variety of businesses, including private schools and law schools.
Badda includes a variety of educational institutions, including BRAC University, United International University, Canadian University of Bangladesh, and Dhaka International University. Notable schools include Badda Alatunnessa Higher Secondary School, Satarkul School and College, and Siraj Mia Memorial Model School. The area also has a sports club, Badda Jagoroni Parishad, which participates in the Dhaka Senior Division Football League.
