About Hatirjheel
Hatirjheel Thana is located in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, and is part of Dhaka North City Corporation. It includes areas like Moghbazar Wireless Colony, Boro Moghbazar, and parts of Eskaton and Malibagh Chowdhury Para.
The thana was formed on 7 July 2018 as the 50th police station of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. Prior to its establishment, the areas now covered by Hatirjheel Thana were administered by the thanas of Ramna, Tejgaon Industrial Area, and Rampura.
The name 'Hatirjheel' comes from a legend that elephants from Pilkhana and Dhanmondi used to bathe in the wetlands. 'Hati' means elephant in Bengali, and 'Jheel' means lake.
The 2022 census recorded a population of 79,974 in Hatirjheel Thana, with a literacy rate of 89.26% for those over the age of seven. There were 21,617 households in the thana at that time.
