About Khulna City Corporation

Khulna City Corporation administers the city of Khulna, located in the Khulna District of the Khulna Division. It currently consists of 31 wards and covers an area of 45.65 square kilometers. The corporation is considering expanding its area to include parts of neighboring upazilas.

Khulna was first declared a municipality by The Calcutta Gazettee on September 8, 1884, and Gagan Chandra Dutta became its first chairman. It was renamed Khulna Pouroshava in 1972 after Bangladesh's independence. The municipality was upgraded to Khulna Municipal Corporation in 1984 during the centennial celebration of the township, and further upgraded to a City Corporation in 1990.

The city is situated in the southwestern part of Bangladesh and is not prominently described in the sources for its geography or rivers. The sources focus on its administrative and municipal history.

Khulna City Corporation is governed by an elected mayor and a council of 41 councillors representing different wards. Elections are held every five years, and the KCC operates under the City Corporation Act, 2009.
